I loved watching this movie in the theater, then on cable, then on CBS, and then on VHS... And now, on DVD.
I had the LOGAN'S RUN novel. I also had a pressbook, 8x10 stills, and one version of the theatrical poster. All of those items have long disappeared.

This movie was shown all over the world, and it also had countless home video releases ( on almost all formats ).
After all this time, I think it's safe to say, that LOGAN'S RUN had the LAST LAUGH.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again, who the hell remembers the critics?!
Just for the record, this movie always had a following. These days, LOGAN'S RUN is more popular than ever.
I'm going to focus my attention on three actresses, Jenny Agutter, Farrah Fawcett ( 1947 – 2009 ), and Candice Rialson ( 1951 – 2006 ). All of them appeared in LOGAN'S RUN.
I'm also going to focus on the MOVIE version of LOGAN'S RUN... NOT the television series.

Ms. Rialson's appearance in LOGAN'S RUN is extremely brief.

I still remember her appearance on MAUDE. She was only on screen for a few minutes, but that was better than nothing.

HOLLYWOOD BOULEVARD is one of Ms. Rialson's better known films. It's also one of my personal favorites. She gets A LOT of screen time in this flick.
Some of her other movies are... PETS, CANDY STRIPE NURSES, MAMA'S DIRTY GIRLS, SUMMER SCHOOL TEACHERS, CHATTERBOX!, STUNTS, and MOONSHINE COUNTY EXPRESS.
At least half of Ms. Rialson's movies have been released on legit VHS, and region one DVD. Some are harder to find than others. There are also gray-market discs of her rare movies. You may also be able to find some of her films online.

ReplyDeleteSaw LR opening day (on a break from film school) in one of the biggest theaters in California, and totally disagree. The effects may look dated NOW, but at the time were state of the art, far above and beyond many of the blockbuster disaster and sci-fi films of the day. It won the Oscar that year for special effects for L.B. Abbott (and company), the wizard behind several Emmy and Oscar winning effects.
I love this movie.... and I was not bashing their efforts. I should have said, a few of the PROPS looked dated.
ReplyDelete1 - Whenever the city was on screen, the miniatures reminded me of the plastic models from the 1964 New York world's fair. They could only work with what they had back then, and I understand that. Plus, the amount of money they were given to work with, was probably another obstacle for them to overcome.
2 - The machine that controled the lasers - inside the "new you" shop - looked like it came from a 1950's low budget flick. That's how I felt about that prop, when I saw it for the first time... and I still feel that way.
In my opinion, the ice cave scenes with the frozen people, were very convincing. The same goes for the D.C. scenes ( outside ).
LOGAN'S RUN has always been unfairly bashed.
Just for the record, I think 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY set the bar for realistic special effects - and props - in science fiction films.
What they accomplished in 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY was truly incredible.
After all this time, it's still more realistic than the vast majority of what I see being made today.
Absolutely agree with the last point. Most effects films today just look like videogames. Nothing beats the pre-CGI films with realistic miniatures beautifully photographed, or amazing matte paintings like the work of Albert Whitlock.
ReplyDeleteI was blown away the first time I saw LR...not so much now, but still love it. And I need to pick up that Blu-ray!
Oh, and HOLLYWOOD BLVD. is a fave of mine also, and I have the DVD in my collection as well. Paul Bartel and Mary Woronov always crack me up in that! So many hilarious bits in that film.
