BASED ON A TRUE STORY.....
I've always had mixed feelings about movies based on TRUE events ( and films about REAL people ).
If most of these types of movies were ACCURATE, it wouldn't be such a bad thing. Unfortunately, as anyone with a FUNCTIONING BRAIN can tell you, the VAST MAJORITY of these films play fast-n-loose with almost eveything that really happened!
That's why I've always preferred documentaries to HIGHLY FICTIONALIZED and HIGHLY BIASED movies. However, even some documentaries are biased and PLAY WITH THE FACTS.
In the United States, LOVELACE is scheduled for a "LIMITED" released sometime in August.
From everything I've been told - by folks that have seen it - LOVELACE is a better movie than you would expect.
However, I've also been told by several people, that it's a "glorified made-for-tv-moive". According to them, Linda Lovelace is portrayed as a "victim".
Curiously, no one has mentioned anyting to me about the performances.
I guess I'll have to wait and find out for myself.
One thing is for certain, Amanda Seyfried is a million times better looking than Linda Lovelace ever was.
Adam Brody is portraying Harry Reems?!... Are you kidding me?!...
UPDATED AUGUST 15, 2013.....
I guess my fears about this film have been proven correct... It is indeed a GLORIFIED MADE FOR TV MOVIE.
Gerard Damiano Jr., the son of DEEP THROAT director Gerard Damiano, has written the most honest and knowledgeable review of LOVELACE that exists.
See link below.....
Gerard Damiano Jr.'s review of LOVELACE ( at the RIALTO REPORT website )
Below is a short list of "FACT BASED" movies... Check it out, you might find something you like.
KILLERS, MASS SUICIDE, AND MURDER PLOTS....
AMY FISHER: MY STORY ( directed by Bradford May - starring Ed Marinaro, and Noelle Parker ) - A made-for-tv-movie, but I don't remember watching it.
AMY FISHER STORY ( directed by Andy Tennant - starring Drew Barrymore and Tony Denison ) - I watched this movie because Drew Barrymore was in it. I haven't seen it in years, so I don't remember if I liked it or not.
CASUALTIES OF LOVE: THE LONG ISLAND LOLITA STORY ( directed by John Herzfeld - starring Alyssa Milano and Jack Scalia ) - It's been a while since I've seen this flick. So, I can't tell you much about it. Alyssa Milano was the only reason I watched it.
CURSE OF THE ZODIAC ( directed by Ulli Lommel - starring Jack Quinn ) - Never seen it.
DAHMER VS. GACY ( I'm NOT going to bother with credits ) - Are you fucking kidding me?!... They're trivializing real life ATROCITIES, by making a fucking-ridiculous-comedic-slasher-flick about REAL LIFE mass murderers... It seems as if, they're trying to turn REAL LIFE ABOMINATIONS into fictionalized horror icons!.. I'd love to put the "filmmakers" and the "stars" of this "movie" in the same room with all the victim's families... The title should have been a warning to me. I stopped watching it after about thirty minutes... Pure garbage.....
DEAR MR. GACY ( directed by Svetozar Ristovski - starring William Forsythe ) - I've never seen this movie.
GACY ( directed by Clive Saunders - starring Mark Holton and with Adam Baldwin ) - I have not see this movie yet.
GUYANA: CULT OF THE DAMNED ( directed by Rene Cardona Jr. - starring Stuart Whitman and many others ) - I don't remember much about this flick.
GUYANA TRAGEDY: THE STORY OF JIM JONES ( directed by William A. Graham - starring Powers Boothe, Ned Beatty, Irene Cara, and many others ) - It's been a long time since I've seen this movie, so I don't really remember much about it.
MONSTER ( directed by Patty Jenkins - starring Charlize Theron and Christina Ricci ) - Great performances, but I didn't like it... and that's all I'm going to say.
TO CATCH A KILLER ( directed by Eric Till - starring Brian Dennehy and with Margot Kidder ) - I haven't seen this movie in a long time. I do remember liking Brian Dennehy's performance.
ULLI LOMMEL'S ZODIAC KILLER ( directed by Ulli Lommel - starring various ) - Haven't seen it.
ZODIAC ( directed by David Fincher - starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Mark Ruffalo and many others ) - Outstanding movie! Incredible performances and camera work! I highly recommend this movie!
ZODIAC KILLER ( directed by Tom Hanson - with quotes by Paul Avery ) - This rare movie is all over the map. But, I still think it's worth watching.
ZODIAC ( directed by Alexander Bulkley - with Marty Lindsey, Philip Baker Hall, and Robin Tunney ) - I have not seen this movie.
POLITICIANS ( aka scum of the eath ).....
ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN ( directed by Alan J. Pakula - starring Dustin Hoffman and Robert Redford ) - Incredible!... A truly great film. I can't recommend it enough.
BLAZE ( directed by Ron Shelton - starring Paul Newman and Lolita Davidovich ) - Been a while since I've seen this movie. I don't remember if I liked it. However, I did like the performances by Paul Newman and Lolita Davidovich.
DICK ( directed by Andrew Fleming - starring Kirsten Dunst, Michelle Williams, and many others ) - hilarious satire about the watergate scandal. It's like a live-action version of one of those MAD MAGAZINE spoofs. I love it, and think it's great. Highly recommended!
FROST / NIXON ( directed by Ron Howard - starring Frank Langella ) - I have not seen this.
NIXON ( directed by Oliver Stone - starring Anthony Hopkins ) - Haven't seen it.
PORN.....
INFERNO: A LINDA LOVELACE STORY ( directed by Matthew Wilder - starring Malin Akerman and Matt Dillon ) - I have NOT seen this movie, because it hasn't been finished.
LOVELACE ( directed by Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman - starring Amanda Seyfried, Peter Sarsgaard, Adam Brody, and many others ) - I have NOT seen it yet. A word of warning, do NOT believe all of the positive hype. That type of bullshit happens far too often with new movies.
SHATTERED INNOCENCE ( directed by Sandor Stern - starring Jonna Lee ) - This is a made-for-tv-movie, and allegedly based on Shauna Grant's life. I saw it a long time ago, and do NOT remember very much about it.
WONDERLAND ( directed by James Cox - starring Val Kilmer, Kate Bosworth, and many others ) - Love the acting, and I recommend it.
OTHER FOLKS AND EVENTS.....
ATTICA ( directed by Marvin J. Chomsky - with Charles Durning and Morgan Freeman ) - A made-for-tv-movie. I recommend it.
COMPLIANCE ( directed by Craig Zobel - starring Dreama Walker ) - Really great, and I highly recommend this film.
CONFESSIONS OF A DANGEROUS MIND ( directed by George Clooney - starring Sam Rockwell, Drew Barrymore, and many others ) - I had a lot of fun watching this movie. Was Chuck Barris a former C.I.A. assassin?... Think about it, that's exactly the kind of thing our government would do. I highly recommend this for the fun factor alone.
DEATH OF A CENTERFOLD: THE DOROTHY STRATEN STORY ( directed by Gabrielle Beaumont - starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Bruce Weitz ) - A made-for-tv-movie. I don't remember anything about it.
DOG DAY AFTERNOON ( directed by Sidney Lumet - starring Al Pacino and many others ) - Al Pacino doing what he does best. I recommend it.
ED WOOD ( directed by Tim Burton - starring Johnny Depp ) - It's a fun flick, but I've got problems with it. However, I still recommend it.
FRENCH CONNECTION ( directed by William Friedkin - starring Gene Hackman, Roy Scheider, Fernando Rey, and many others ) - This flick still packs a powerful punch. Tony Lo Bianco and Arlene Farber also appear in this movie. I higly recommend it!
NOTORIOUS BETTIE PAGE ( directed by Mary Harron - starring Gretchen Mol ) - Gretchen Mol is incredible! There are a few things I didn't like, but I still recommend it.
PEARL HARBOR ( directed by Michael Bay - starring Ben Affleck, Josh Hartnett, and Kate Beckinsale ) - This is a GLORIFIED SOAP OPERA! The fact that Mr. Bay directed this flick should be a HUGE warning.... AVOID!
PINERO ( directed by Leon Ichaso - starring Benjamin Bratt ) - I haven't seen it yet, so I can't tell you anything.
SERPICO ( directed by Sidney Lumet - starring Al Pacino ) - Al Pacino at his best. I highly recommend it.
STAR 80 ( directed by Bob Fosse - starring Mariel Hemingway and Eric Roberts ) - A movie about Dorothy Stratten. Some good performances in this film, but that's all I remember about it. I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it either.
