FAVORITE ARTISTS ( PART 2 )
James Bama and Bill Campbell - Above is a print ad for AURORA model kits with art by James Bama ( left ), and the book cover for A WEIRD-OH WORLD: THE ART OF BILL CAMPBILL ( on the right... ISBN - 9780764346484 )
PART 2 OF 2
IMAGINATION BUILDERS.....
I loved building plastic model kits, REALLY LOVED IT!
As an added bonus, countless great artists worked for most of the model kit companies.
I think most folks remember James Bama and Bill Campbell. And yes, they were, and still are, two of my favorites!
Below are some other artists you should know...
Dave Deal - Above, his artwork for REVELL
Ed Roth - Above is a print ad for REVELL ( featuring a photo of Ed Roth ).
Tom Daniel - Above are various print ads for MONOGRAM model kits.
And there are many others that I can not remember...
Above are screengrabs of FOGHORN LEGHORN and GUMBY & POKEY... Yes, I know most old cartoons were extremely violent and many of the characters had homicidal tendencies, so what's your point?.... ha-ha-ha...
TRADITIONAL ANIMATION, STOP-MOTION, SPECIAL & VISUAL EFFECTS.....
I think almost everyone on earth has watched animation, and the same can be said of old science fiction and creature feature flicks.
There are far too many people to list, so below are just a few...
Art Clokey
Chiodo Bros.
George Pal
GIGANTOR aka TETSUJIN 28 ( everyone that worked on it )
Henry Selick
LOONEY TUNES & MERRIE MELODIES ( everyone that worked on it )
Nick Park
SCOOBY-DOO ( everyone that worked on it )
Stan Winston
Ray Harryhausen
Tim Burton
SPECIAL & VISUAL EFFECTS ( from all over the world )
Willis O'Brien
And there are many others...
Above are book covers for GIL ELVGREN ( on left... ISBN - 9783836503051 ), and MEL RAMOS POP ART FANTASIES: THE COMPLETE PAINTINGS ( on right... ISBN - 978-0823040933 )
PIN-UPS, AND OTHER THINGS.....
Yes, naked ladies were also a big influence on me... ha-ha-ha.
However, I tend to get bored fairly quickly, unless there's something else going on. Just a little bit of story, or an interesting background, can go a long way.
Some of my favorites are...
Alberto Vargas
David Nestler
Earl Moran
Gil Elvgren
George Petty
Mel Ramos
Olivia De Berardinis
Above are book covers for ( from left to right )... NORMAN BEL GEDDES DESIGNS AMERICA ( ISBN - 9781419702990 ), THE SHOW STARTS ON THE SIDEWALK: AN ARCHITECTURAL HISTORY OF THE MOVIE THEATRE, STARRING S. CHARLES LEE ( ISBN - 9780300055276 ), INDUSTRIAL DESIGN ( ISBN - 9781585679850 ), and THE LEISURE ARCHITECTURE OF WAYNE MCALLISTER ( ISBN - 978-1586856991 )
INDUSTRIAL, ARCHITECTURAL, AND OTHER THINGS.....
These folks aren't seen as artists by most of the population, and I think that's wrong. We all come into contact with this art everyday. It's right in front of everybody, but they don't see it.
The book above is called MANHATTAN UNFURLED by Matteo Pericoli - From my personal collection ( ISBN - 9780375504914 )
Below are more names you should know...
Matteo Pericoli
Matt Bergstrom ( Wurlington Bros. Press )
Norman Bel Geddes
Raymond Loewy
S. Charles Lee
Syd Mead
Wayne McAllister
And many others
Above is a scan showing the front and back covers of a timetable for CHICAGO AND NORTH WESTERN RAILWAY ( OCT. 25, 1959 ) - I do not know who the artist is. Timetable is from my personal collection.
A SALUTE TO ALL THE UNCREDITED ARTISTS.....
There are countless folks that never got credit for their work. You've seen their art since childhood, but you don't know who made it.
Their work appeared on, magazine covers, book covers, cereal boxes, cookie boxes, print ads, matchbook covers, posters, automotive brochures, travel brochures, railroad timetables, calendars, you name it, they did it.
The BARNUM'S ANIMALS CRACKERS box above, is one of the oldest and most iconic pieces of commercial art in the United States... And yet, I can not find anyone that knows who the artists were ( from my personal collection ).
During the VHS era, there was a lot of art on box covers with NO credit, and I've been seeing the same thing with many DVD covers.
I realize most of those artists worked for advertising agencies, but I still think it was wrong for them not to get any credit, and I will NOT apologize for my views.
Below is a short list of my favorite types of uncredited artists...
Automotive designers / stylists
Artists that did work for packaging
Artists that did work for print ads
Artists that did work for brochures
And many others, that did NOT get any acknowledgment.....

Love all that stuff! Back in the 60s I had all the crazy models: Rat Fink, the Weird-Ohs, had the Mars Attacks cards, the Crazy Ads, the magazines like CARtoons, DRAG Cartoons, and on and on. So much talent all but forgotten!
ReplyDeleteThanks for mentioning them and paying them tribute!!
