ONE NIGHT STANDS AND LOST WEEKENDS

I love short stories, and short films. I don't think either gets the respect or amount of attention they deserve.

All the short stories in this collection were written by a young Lawrence Block.

I've only been able to read a few stories so far, but I like them a lot.

I'm very happy to add ONE NIGHT STANDS AND LOST WEEKENDS to my collection of "block-books".

  1. Agree completely with your statement about short stories and short films. I've recently been on a sci-fi short story kick, picking up a lot of old '50s sci-fi pulps, and being reminded how great the writing was back then. As for short films, except for YouTube there are few ways to see any, as there's a kind-of condescension toward those who prefer to make shorts instead of (usually over-long) feature films. If a film runs past 75 or 80 minutes, it had better be damned interesting or I'm out the door or hit the off button.

Yes, a lot of people don't consider folks that make short films, as "real filmmakers". I also think it's much harder to tell a story when you only have twenty-five minutes or less.

Far too many filmmakers don't seem to understand, that your main job is to entertain, NOT preach.

I'd love to find some CHEAP vintage pulps / men's adventure magazines. Unfortunately, the flea-markets and garage sales in my area only seem to specialize in USED UNDERWEAR. Meanwhile, the hipster-doofus shops that sell vintage books, mags, vhs, beta, etc, slap a premium price on those types of items.

  3. I've been lucky finding '50s sci-fi pulps mostly for $3-7 a copy on Amazon Marketplace and AbeBooks, but yeah, a lot of dealers do charge ridiculous prices for anything that looks sci-fi or noir-ish.

As for short films, some of the best films I've seen have been shorts. I've made shorts for years myself, only because it's damn near impossible to find people reliable enough to stick with a project that takes more than one day to shoot. I still hope to make a 60-70 minute long feature before I croak. Look at Corman's best '50s films, and most are under 70 minutes in length!
