August 2001... Malena and Pablo are siblings. They've just flown to Buenos Aires from Spain to take their estranged father off life support.

It takes a while for Malena to convince her brother to sign the legal documents that will end their father's life.

Pablo agrees to sign, on one condition, Malena must accompany him on a journey to their childhood home in Patagonia.

This is not an ordinary cross-country trip.

First, Pablo finds a journal hidden in one of the wheel wells of the old station wagon they're traveling in.

Then, they have repeated encounters with people mentioned in the journal. Did I mention those folks have been dead for over twenty years?

The siblings discover a lot of disturbing information about their father and the doctor treating him. Those revelations and the events that follow, almost kills one of them, and will change their lives forever.

The ghosts of the past will haunt us, until we deal with them.....

DO I WANT MY MONEY BACK?:
No!...

I love this film for many reasons.

This is a HIGH QUALITY movie, and it was made by folks that knew what they were doing! This is NOT some micro-budget flick that was slapped together with chewing gum and spit.

It has great writing and beautiful camera work.

There's a scene involving a big old FARGO pick-up truck and a old falcon station wagon that reminds me of the made-for-tv flick DUEL ( I mean that as a compliment ).

At one point during the movie, it's September 10, 2001. Pablo tells Malena, that life will be better in the 21st century, because humanity has learned from their past mistakes.

We all know what happened the day after... And most of us, also know, the human race will never change for the better... And that's the tragedy of it all.

I think this movie is a true gem. It's one of those films that gets ignored, but deserves far better.

I found out about this film by accident. I found it - and THE CLINIC from Australia - in my local WALMART bargain bin ( you never know what you're going to find in those bins ).

It was released on region one DVD by IFC.

  1. CLINIC and THE APPEARED both sound very interesting. Sadly, my local Walmart never carries anything like these in the $5 bargain bin.
